Anton Chekhov played many roles in his life: writer, doctor, prison reformer, traveler, humanitarian, loyal husband, son and brother, but it was his role planning and laboring in his gardens that sustained him through sickness, criticism, and depression. Following the curving paths of his estates at Melikhovo and Yalta, Chekhov created both his gardens and the twilight Russia of his plays and stories in the round, without boundaries or endings.
